Characteristics

Plants solitary, or in groups of a dozen or more. Stem none, or very short. Leaves 14-20, multifarious, up to 40 cm long, 9 cm diam., dull green, somewhat veined; upper surface slightly canaliculate, unspotted; lower surface slightly convex, without spots, sometimes with a few small white spots near base; margins with a white cartilaginous edge armed with firm white deltoid teeth 1-3 mm long. Inflorescence simple, up to 50 cm high, 1-3 from a plant. Peduncle flattened low down, terete upwards, sterile-bracteate in upper half, the sterile bracts membranous, ovate-acuminate about 5-nerved. Raceme densely capitate, somewhat corymbose, about 40-flowered, about 5 cm long, 10-12 cm broad, flowers yellow to red. Bracts ovate-acuminate, the lowest about one-third the length of their pedicels. Pedicels lowest 30-40 mm long, becoming erect and 50 mm long in the fruit. Perianth ellipsoidal, roundly-trigonous, 20-24 mm long, 7 mm diam., the mouth usually slightly upturned, basally stipitate and tapering into the pedicel; outer segments free almost to base, 3-5-nerved, the nerves confluent and greenish at apex, the apices obtuse, straight to slightly spreading, the 2 upper closely grouped; inner segments free to base, with more obtuse slightly spreading apices.
