Characteristics

Stem usually short, it appears. Leaves 30-40, densely rosulate, lanceolate, very glaucous, obscurely lineate, without spots, up to 30-40 cm long, 10-15 cm broad low down; upper surface flat low down, slightly canaliculate near apex; lower surface convex, sparingly tuberculate-aculeate near apex; margins armed with reddish-brown pungent deltoid teeth about 4-5 mm long. Inflorescence simple, one or more from a rosette, about 60-80 cm high. Peduncle covered with numerous sterile bracts which are ovate-attenuate, thin, dry, white, many-nerved, about 30 mm long, 15 mm broad. Raceme cylindric-acuminate, 15-20 cm long, 8-9 cm broad, the buds densely congested and obscured by their longer bracts, gradually laxer downwards, with the open flowers sub-pendulous. Bracts ovate-deltoid, about 30 mm long, 10 mm broad, thin scarious, white, many-nerved, basally sub-amplexicaul. Pedicels 30-35 mm long, longer in the fruit. Perianth about 40 mm long, very slightly trigonously indented about 9 mm from base, thence slightly enlarging upwards and narrowing a little towards the throat, pale red (Grenadine Pink R.C.S. 11) slightly greenish tipped; outer segments free to base, the apices paler, sub-acute, slightly spreading; inner segments free, not cohering to the outer, with white_ edges and a keel the colour of the perianth for its greater length turning greenish at apex, the apices more obtuse and more spreading than the outer. Filaments white, filiform-flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer. Anthers exserted 1-2 mm.; stigma at length exserted 2-3 mm. Ovary 9 mm long, 3 mm diam., green, slightly tapering into the style.

Plants usually solitary, short-stemmed, 300-600 mm tall excluding inflorescence. Leaves 30-40, lanceolate, 250-400 x 70-150 mm, upper surface flat to slightly channelled, lower surface convex, very glaucous with faint longitudinal lines. Inflorescence a simple raceme; peduncle 0.5-1.0 m long; bracts ovate-deltoid, acute, 27-40 x 8-15 mm, many-nerved. Flowers deep pink, cylindric, 28-40 mm long; pedicels 19-40 mm long. Anthers exserted 1-2 mm. Ovary 5-9 x 2-3 mm, green; style exserted up to 3 mm. Fruit not seen.
Acaulescent or short-stemmed, succulent perennial, often suckering from base to form colonies. Leaves blue-grey, lanceolate, without spots, obscurely lineate, 30-40 cm long, lower surface often with small, scattered spines towards tip; margins with pungent, deltoid, reddish brown teeth. Racemes cylindric, dense, simple, 60-80 cm high. Flowers pink to pale orange, slightly greenish tipped, ± 40 mm long; stamens and stigma exserted.
Acaulescent or short-stemmed, 300-600 mm tall. Leaves distinctly blue-grey, up to 400 mm long, without spots, with faint longitudinal lines, lower surfaces often with small, scattered spines towards tips, margins with contrasting reddish brown teeth. Flowers in stout, unbranched, conical racemes, nodding, pink to pale orange, buds covered by large bracts.
