Characteristics

Plants with slender creeping and rooting procumbent stems up to 50 cm long, with suckers and offshoots forming large dense groups and colonies. Leaves about 20 in a dense rosette, lanceolate-attenuate, erectly spreading with the apical portion slightly recurved, 45-50 cm long, 8-9 cm broad at base; upper surface rather glaucous, flat low down, sub-canaliculate towards apex, glabrous, without spots or lines; lower surface convex; margins with a dull white to palest pink cartilaginous narrow edge, armed with deltoid teeth about 2 mm, long, up to 10 mm distant, the teeth dull white, pale brown tipped, mostly curved towards apex of leaf, smaller and more crowded low down, larger and more distant upwards. Inflorescence a branched panicle up to 1 met. high, sometimes 2 simultaneously, branched about the middle or lower with 8-18 branches, the lowest branches sometimes 1-2-branched, the branches and racemes spreading horizontally to obliquely. Racemes sub-densely flowered, 30-40 cm long, obliquely disposed, the flowers secund and all pointing towards base of branch; the buds rather globular, dull reddish with a bloom. Open flowers sulphur-yellow to ivory, reddish-tinged near base, with a bloom. Bracts ovate-acute, thin scarious, 6 mm long, 3-5-nerved. Pedicels 3-4 mm long. Perianth cylindric-clavate, averaging 26 mm long, 5 mm diam. near base, 10 mm diam. near the throat, narrowing slightly at the mouth; outer segments free for two-thirds their length, (tube about 8 mm), 3-5-nerved, the nerves rose-coloured or turning greenish near apex, apices rather white, spreading; inner segments broader than the outer, with 3 congested nerves forming a keel turning green at apex, With much more obtuse spreading to revolute apices. Filaments deep brown to purplish, almost black, flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer. Anthers orange, the 3 inner and 3 outer in turn exserted 12 mm Style pale yellow. Stigma at length exserted 12-14 mm Capsule oblong, 25 mm long, 13 mm, diam. at the middle.
More
Herb succulent, stemless. Leaves 16-23 in a dense rosette, erect-spreading, lanceolate-ensiform, distinctly attenuated, recurved at the apex, glaucous, unspotted, somewhat flat at the base canaliculate above, 45-50 cm long, and 8-9 cm broad at the base; margins cartilaginous, wavy and toothed; teeth standing out at right angles to the margins, deltoid, recurved, pale brown, 14-2 mm long and about 8-9 mm apart. Inflorescence very branched, about 60 cm.-l metre high; peduncle stout, glaucous, naked; branches 5-7 spreading horizontally to obliquely, with a few small deltoid-acute empty bracts at the base; racemes densely flowered 22-40 cm long; flowers secund, all pointing upwards the centre of the inflorescence and at the same time slightly deflexed, unopened flowers copal red (R.C.S.), green at the tips, sulphur-yellow (R.C.S.) when expanded and tinged with red towards the base; the young buds distinctly globular; bracts scariose, pellucidate, 5-6 mm long, ovate-cuspidate, reflexed; pedicels recurved 3-4 mm long. Perianth 25 mm long, cylindrical-ventricose, very shortly stipitate; outer segments free for 15-17 mm., obtuse, recurved at the apex, 3-5-nerved; inner segments obtuse, recurved, tipped with auburn (R.C.S.); with three green nerves. Stamens projecting 11 mm beyond the perianth and slightly recurved, the exposed portion of the filaments chestnut-brown to black; anthers mars orange (R.C.S.). Style stout, strongly recurved, pale sulphur-yellow (R.C.S.). Capsule shortly stipitate, oblong-ovoid, 25 mm long and 13 mm broad.
Plants stemless, 400-600 mm tall excluding inflorescence, suckering and forming large dense groups. Leaves ±20 per rosette, erectly spreading to slightly incurved, with recurved apices, 400-600 x 55-90 mm, glaucous. Inflorescence of lax, secund racemes, with 8-18 horizontal to ascending branches, up to 1 m tall; bracts ovate-acute to lanceolate-acute, 3-8 x 3-4 mm, 3-5-nerved. Flowers deep dull red in bud, sulphur-yellow to ivory-coloured at flowering, 18-26 mm long; outer segments connate in basal third, inner segments free; pedicels 2-5 mm long. Anthers exserted 5-12 mm. Ovary ±6 x 2 mm; style exserted 5-14 mm. Fruit ±25 x 13 mm.
Leaves in a dense rosette, spreading-erect with apices slightly recurved; lamina 40–60 cm long, 8–11 cm wide at the base, lanceolate-attenuate, greyish-green, pink-tinged in dry conditions, without spots; margin cartilaginous with firm deltoid pale brown-tipped teeth c. 2 mm long and 5–10 mm apart.
Perianth dull-red with a bloom, and ivory to yellowish towards the mouth, 22–25 mm long, 5–6 mm in diameter across the ovary, clavate and widening to c. 10 mm in diameter, then narrowing slightly at the mouth; outer segments free for c. two-thirds with tips not recurved; buds almost globose.
