Characteristics

Plants acaulescent or with very short stem, suckering freely and forming dense groups. Leaves 10-20, densely rosulate, lanceolate, about 10-15 cm long (usually with an additional 5 cm of dried twisted apex), 6-7 cm broad; upper surface brownish-green, flat near base, slightly canaliculate near apex, with numerous dull white oblong spots usually arranged into a series of undulating interrupted transverse bands; lower surface convex, usually with the spots in transverse bands more prominently marked than the upper surface; margins sinuate-dentate, with a horny reddish-brown edge armed with pungent deltoid reddish-brown teeth 3-5 mm long, 8-10 mm distant. Inflorescence a branched panicle, usually about 90 cm high, branched above the middle, with 4-7 arcuate-erect branches subtended at base by deltoid-acuminate thin scarious many-nerved bracts up to 30 mm, long, 10 mm broad at base. Racemes usually cylindric, slightly acuminate, laxly 20-30-flowered, the terminal 15-20 cm long, sometimes shorter and more densely flowered. Brads deltoid-acuminate, thin scarious white, about 5-nerved, usually the length of the pedicels. Pedicels lowest of terminal racemes 10-15 mm long, longer in the fruit stage. Perianth distinctly clavate, dull reddish (rarely pale flesh coloured), 28-30 mm long, cylindrical at base, not or exceedingly slightly narrowed above the ovary, thence enlarging clavately; outer segments free for about 8-10 mm, with prominent white marginal border about 1.5 mm broad, the apices sub-acute, slightly spreading; inner segments a little broader than the outer, with broader white marginal border and more obtuse more spreading apices than the outer. Filaments filiform-flattened, the 3 inner slightly narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer, with their anthers in turn exserted up to 5 mm Stigma at length exserted up to 5 mm. Ovary 9 mm long, 3 mm diam., finely 6-grooved, olive green.
