Characteristics

Plants solitary, or in small groups from branching at ground level. Stem none, or up to 15 cm Leaves 10-14, distichous, 35-45 cm long, 5-6 cm broad, somewhat lorate-acuminate (margins parallel for about two-thirds the length of the leaf, thence tapering to a point); upper surface dull green, usually without spots, sometimes sparingly spotted, flat to slightly canaliculate; lower surface slightly convex, usually copiously white spotted near base; margins with exceedingly small soft white teeth about (mm long, 5-10-15 mm, apart, usually more crowded near apex. Inflorescence simple, averaging 50 cm high. Peduncle sterile-bracteate in upper half; the sterile bracts ovate-acuminate, 25 mm long, 15 mm broad, thin scarious white, many-nerved. Racemes about 50-flowered, densely capitate, up to 7 cm long, 9-10 cm diam., the flowers apricot-yellow (Cadmium yellow R.C.S. Ill), greenish tipped. Bracts about half as long as their pedicels, sub-scarious, ovate-acuminate, 5-7-nerved, 15 mm long, 7 mm broad. Pedicels average 25 mm, long, longer in the fruit. Perianth 28-30 mm long, roundly trigonous, usually obtusely tapering at base into the pedicel; outer segments free to within 5 mm of base, obscurely nerved greenish at apex, apices sub-acute, straight to slightly spreading; inner segments free, not cohering to the outer, with a keel the colour of the perianth turning green at apex. Genitals exserted 1 mm. Ovary green, 7 mm long, 3-4 mm diam., finely 6-grooved. Capsule 30 mm long, 16 mm diam.
