Characteristics

Stem simple, or branched about the middle, 1-1.5 met. high, 10-15 cm diam. at base, with old dry leaf remains persistent unless rubbed off by animals. Leaves many, densely rosulate, lanceolate-attenuate, usually about 40 cm long, 8 cm broad at base, arcuate-erect to slightly incurved, with the apical portion spreading to slightly recurved, the rosettes rather compact; upper surface flat to slightly canaliculate upwards, dull green, usually with a few irregularly scattered elliptic, white spots, slightly and obscurely lineate; lower surface convex, similar to the upper surface in colour, with the spots sometimes more numerous; margins sinuate-dentate, armed with deltoid pungent horny reddish-brown teeth about 2-4 mm long, 5-10 mm distant. Inflorescence a branched panicle 60-90 cm long, 4-8-branched from about the middle. Peduncle flattened, about 5 cm diam. low down, not sterile-bracteate below the lowest branch, but branches below the racemes with several ovate-acute, thin, scarious, brown, many-nerved sterile bracts. Racemes long-conical, 25-30 cm long, 9 cm diam. below, the apex acuminate, rather densely flowered with the open flowers laxer, the buds denser. Bracts ovate-acute, thin, scarious, brown, many-nerved, up to 18 mm long, 8 mm, broad, sub-amplexicaul, mostly about half the length of the lowest pedicels. Pedicels the lowest up to 25 mm long, shorter upwards. Perianth cylindric-trigonous, orange-red, greenish tipped, 30-35 mm long, basally rounded; outer segments free to base, obscurely nerved, the nerves more distinct and greenish at apex, apices sub-acute slightly spreading; inner segments free, not cohering to the outer, broader than the outer, white, with a keel the colour of the perianth for its greater length turning green at apex, apices more obtuse more spreading. Filaments filiform-flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer. Anthers the 3 inner and 3 outer in turn exserted 2-4 mm Stigma at length exserted 4 mm. Ovary 8 mm long, 3.5 mm diam., finely 6-grooved, green.
More
Usually single-stemmed with only one rosette, sometimes branched into two, erect, 0.5-2 m tall. Leaves long, relatively narrow, ± 400 mm long, 80 mm wide at base, usually with small white spots on upper and particularly lower surfaces, margins with reddish brown triangular teeth. Flowers in repeatedly branched, broadly triangular racemes, orange-red with greenish yellow tips.
