Characteristics

Plant succulent, with fleshy fusiform roots, solitary or in small groups. Stem none, or very short. Leaves 8-10, distichous or sub-distichous, sometimes becoming rosulate in old specimens, broadly linear-acuminate, about 30-40 cm long, 3-5 cm broad (sometimes reaching 60 cm in length, 5 cm broad, in old specimens growing in moist sheltered positions); upper surface slightly canaliculate, dull green, without spots; tower surface slightly convex, dull green, usually without spots but sometimes with a few white spots near base; margins with an extremely narrow white cartilaginous edge with minute teeth, which are more distant near base, smaller to obsolescent upwards. Inflorescence simple, 1-3 from a leaf cluster, up to 40 cm high. Peduncle sterile bracteate in upper half. Racemes densely capitate, somewhat corymbose, about 30-40-flowered, the buds and open flowers lemon-yellow to yellow. Bracts lanceolate-deltoid, the lowest about 15 mm long. Pedicels the lowest about 35 mm long, shorter upwards, becoming erect and up to 50 mm long in the fruit. Perianth lemon-yellow to yellow, 16-18 mm long, roundly tapering at base into the pedicel, the mouth slightly upturned; outer segments free almost to base, the 2 upper closely grouped, with 5 greenish nerves confluent to a brownish spot at apex; inner segments free to base, a little broader than the outer, and with more obtuse more spreading apices. Anthers exserted up to 3 mm Stigma exserted up to 5 mm, Ovary pale green, 4 mm long. Capsule 27 mm, long, 17 mm, diam., 6-grooved.
