Characteristics

Stem up to 1.5 met. in old specimens, simple or branched low down or higher, usually with old dry leaves persistent. Leaves 30-40, densely rosulate, lanceolate-acuminate, mostly averaging 30 cm, long, 7 cm broad, but reaching 40 cm long, 9 cm broad in the largest specimens, usually ascending and forming a rather compact rosette, sometimes spreading; upper surface dull to bright green, not glaucous, distinctly lineate, flat low down, slightly canaliculate near apex; lower surface bright green, distinctly lineate, convex; margins with a reddish-brown horny edge armed with pungent deltoid reddish-brown teeth 4-6 mm long, 5-15 mm distant, smaller and more crowded low down, longer and more distant upwards. Inflorescence simple, 75 cm.-1 met. high, 1-4 from a rosette, simultaneous or consecutive. Peduncle clothed with numerous lanceolate-acute many-nerved thin scarious brownish-white spreading sterile bracts up to 25 mm, long, 12 mm broad at base. Raceme somewhat conic, 20-30 cm long, the buds densely congested and hidden by their longer fleshy bracts, the open flowers laxer, sub-pendulous. Bracts the lowest broadly deltoid-acute, thin, sub-scarious, whitish, about 20 mm long; with many dull reddish-brown nerves confluent at apex. Pedicels 40 mm, longer in the fruit. Perianth salmon pink, 45-50 mm long, somewhat cylindric-trigonous, 9 mm diam. near base, very slightly constricted above the ovary to 8 mm, broadening to 11 mm higher up, slightly narrowing to the throat; outer segments free to base or almost so, about 8 mm broad at widest part, with about 12 obscure nerves confluent at apex, apices sub-acute slightly spreading; inner segments free to base, not cohering to the outer, about 10 mm broad at widest part, with a distinct keel the colour of the perianth turning green at apex, apices spreading. Filaments the 3 outer about 2 mm broad, twice as broad as the 3 inner which lengthen first, all pale lemon coloured. Anthers exserted 1-3 mm Style distinctly more yellow than the filaments, with the stigma at length exserted 4 mm and remaining exserted after pollination and after the filaments dry and contract, Ovary 8 mm long, 3 mm diam. at base, narrowing to 2 mm at apex, finely 6-grooved, green. Capsule 27 mm long, 7-5 mm diam. at middle, usually more or less enwrapped with the remains of the dried perianth.
