Characteristics

Leaves in a compact rosette, spreading; lamina 30–50 cm long, 6–7 cm wide at the base, lanceolate, usually dried and twisted in the apical half or more, pale green, tinged purplish towards the apex and margins, obscurely striate and unspotted on both surfaces; margin cartilaginous with pungent deltoid minutely brown-tipped teeth 1–4 mm long and 8–20 mm apart.

Perianth coral-red with a slight bloom, paler toward the mouth, 28–33 mm long, c. 8 mm in diameter across the ovary, slightly constricted above, cylindric-trigonous; outer segments free to almost halfway, with slightly recurved tips.
Inflorescence erect to c. 1.1 m high; peduncle c. 6-branched; branches curving upwards and subtended by ovate scarious bracts c. 10 × 12 mm, with a few sterile bracts below each raceme.
Racemes 15–25 × 6 cm, cylindrical, laxly flowered; bracts 4–5 × 3.5 mm, ovate-acute, scarious, whitish with darker veining; pedicels c. 7 mm long, elongating to c. 10 mm in fruit.
Seeds c. 6 × 10 mm, blackish-brown, with broad, buff, speckled wings.
Capsule 25–30 × 11–15 mm, oblong-ovoid, dark yellowish-brown.
Stamens and stigma exserted to c. 6 mm.
