Characteristics

Plants usually solitary, with thick fleshy fusiform roots. Stem none, or very short, simple, sometimes 1-2 branched. Leaves 12-18, multifarious, rigid (sub-distichous only in young plants), up to 50 cm long, 30 mm broad at base, narrowly deltoid, acuminate; upper surface canaliculate, deep green to yellowish-green; lower surface convex, the same colour, both surfaces copiously white spotted throughout, the spots sub-tuberculate and sub-spinulescent, the facial spots longer and narrower, the dorsal spots rounder and more crowded near base; margins slightly involute, with a cartilaginous edge armed with firm white teeth up to 2 mm long low down, 1-3 mm distant, smaller upwards, minute near apex. Inflorescence 1-2, simple, capitate, 45-50 cm high, usually as tall as the longest leaves. Peduncle sterile bracteate in upper half, the lowest bracts up to 4 cm long, 12 mm broad at base, sub-scarious many-nerved, smaller upwards. Racemes densely capitate, somewhat corymbose, about 24-flowered, 8 cm long, 9 cm diam., the youngest buds crowded erect, open flowers laxer, cernuous to pendulous. Brads ovate-acuminate, as long as their pedicels, clasping the pedicel and somewhat fleshy low down, thinner more scarious and browner towards apex, about 12-nerved. Pedicels lowest 35 mm long, the salmon-pink colour of the perianth. Perianth salmon-pink (near strawberry-pink R.C.S. 1.), 38 mm long, straight, cylindric-trigonous, slightly constricted above ovary (about 15 mm from base), the mouth wide open, basally rounded and stipitate; outer segments free to base, obscurely nerved, the apices sub-acute, spreading; inner segments free, broader than the outer, with thin white edges, carinate throughout, the keel pinkish in lower half, greenish upwards, the apices more obtuse and more spreading. Filaments white, slightly flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer. Anthers included, or exserted 1 mm Stigma at length exserted 1-2 mm, Ovary the colour of the perianth, 8 mm long, 3 mm diam.

Stemless grass aloe 350-500 mm tall, solitary; roots fusiform. Leaves 30-46 cm a rosette, lorate, 300-500 x 20-40 mm, acuminate, with irregular white spots on both surfaces throughout or only near expanded bases, margins cartilaginous, dentate.
