Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Asphodelaceae > Aloe

Characteristics

Plants small, acaulescent, with fusiform roots. Leaves 8-12, rosulate, narrowly linear, 25 cm long, 8-10 mm broad, dilating and becoming amplexicaul at ground level; upper surface dull green, canaliculate, with a few white spots in lower quarter; lower surface convex, dull green, more copiously spotted near base, the spots somewhat tuberculate-sub-spinulescent; margins armed with minute white teeth, larger and more crowded near base, more distant to obsolescent upwards. Inflorescence simple, sometimes 2, 20-25 cm high. Peduncle terete, 4 mm diam., clothed with numerous ovate long-acuminate sterile bracts in upper two-thirds, the lowest sub-amplexicaul and up to 20 mm long. Racemes densely capitate, about 45 cm long, 6 cm diam., 20-30-flowered, the buds and flowers mostly dull reddish-pink, rarely greenish-white. Bracts ovate long-acuminate, as long as the pedicels. Pedicels lowest 15 mm long, shorter upwards. Perianth cylindric-trigonous, 20 mm long, basally sub-stipitate and tapering into the pedicel, the mouth distinctly bilabiate, upturned; outer segments free, apices sub-acute, 3-nerved, the nerves dull reddish, confluent at apex; inner segments broader than the outer, greenish-white with a keel the colour of the perianth, apices more obtuse. Note: The upper 2 outer and 1 inner segment apices are closely grouped, recurved, and form a distinct lip, the lower outer and 2 inner apices also forming a lip; the mouth distinctly bilabiate and up-curved. Filaments filiform-flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer. Genitals not, or very shortly exserted. Ovary 4-5 mm long, 2 mm diam. at base, tapering into the style, finely 6-grooved.
