Characteristics

Roots: fleshy, fusiform, 8-10 cm long. Leaves few, often 4, distichous, linear, erect, flaccid, 20-25 cm long, 6-8 mm broad at the middle, rather flat, attenuate at the base, apex obtuse, with nerves along the back, tuberculate-muricate, the margins ciliate with minute crowded prickles. Peduncle straight, 40 cm high, clothed with many small scarious ovate-deltoid shortly cuspidate sterile bracts. Flowers in a densely capitate raceme about 3 cm long and broad, pale rose. Pedicels the lowest 10-12 mm long, shorter upwards. Bracts ovate-lanceolate, shortly cuspidate, scarious, about as long as the pedicels. Perianth shortly cylindrical, basally stipitate, straight or slightly curved, 8 mm long, pale rose. Segments linear, acute, the outer 3-nerved, connate at base into a very short tube. Genitals included.
