Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Asphodelaceae > Aloe

Characteristics

Plants mostly solitary, sometimes in small groups. Stem none or very shortly procumbent. Leaves about 30, arcuate erectly incurved at apex forming a compact rosette, about 25 cm long, 7 cm broad low down, lanceolate-acuminate, rather glaucous, turning slightly reddish at apex; upper surface flat to slightly convex, usually with a few spines in median line in upper quarter; lower surface convex, with about 6 spines in median line dorsally in upper third, sometimes with 2 rows of spines, the spines springing from a whitish tubercular base, whitish low down turning reddish to brown at apex; margins armed with deltoid (sometimes uncate) pungent teeth up to 6 mm long, 15 mm distant near apex, smaller and more crowded downwards, the teeth whitish at base, reddish to brown at apex, the leaf apices terminating in a pungent spine. Inflorescence 40 cm high, usually 1, sometimes 2-3 from a rosette, simple, rarely forked low down. Peduncle flattened low down, about 13 mm diam., with a few ovate, long-acuminate, thin sub-scarious pale brownish, many-nerved sterile bracts up to 15 mm long, 9 mm broad at base. Racemes cylindric, slightly acuminate, very densely flowered, up to 25 cm long, 7-8 cm diam., the buds dull red, open flowers mostly greenish-cream with a slightly reddish tinge, exserted portion of the stamens deep purple with yellow-orange anthers, giving the raceme a somewhat tricoloured effect. Bracts narrowly ovate-acuminate, 16 mm long, 7 mm broad, basally amplexicaul, thin, whitish, sub-scarious with 3-5 crowded nerves confluent at apex. Pedicels 2-4 mm long, green. Perianth cylindric-ventricose with slightly upturned mouth, 26-30 mm long, with a copious supply of clear nectar; outer segments free almost to base, with 3 greenish nerves confluent at apex, apices slightly spreading; inner segments free, not cohering to the outer, white with thin edges, and with 3 congested greenish nerves in median line forming a slight keel, the apices spreading to revolute. Filaments flattened, lemon coloured within the perianth, the 20-25 mm exserted portion deep purple to almost black. Style filiform, with the stigma at length exserted 15-20 mm, the included portion lemon, the exserted portion pale brownish (not the deep purple of the filaments). Ovary green, finely 6-grooved, 6 mm long, 3 mm diam. Flowers in July to early August.
