Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Asphodelaceae > Aloe

Characteristics

Plants solitary, with a stem up to 1 met. long, 25 cm diam., sub-erect or arcuate-erect, covered with the dried remains of old leaves when not charred by veld fires. Leaves 40-60, densely multifarious, youngest leaves sub-erect, older ones arcuate-erect to spreading, lanceolate-acuminate, up to 50 cm long, 15 cm broad, with an additional 10 cm of dried reddish apex; upper surface flat below, canaliculate upwards, green but lightly covered with a greyish powdery substance causing a glaucous appearance, somewhat obscurely lineate; lower surface convex, similar to the upper surface; margins armed with reddish deltoid pungent horny teeth about 3-4 mm long, 10-15 mm distant, the teeth usually more crowded near base, more distant upwards. Inflorescence 1 only, a branched panicle, 2-3-5 met. high. Peduncle stout, about 7 cm diam. low down, branched about the middle or higher with 5-8 branches, the 1-2 lowest each with 1-2 branchlets producing a total of up to 12 racemes, 6-8 racemes being the usual; lowest branches subtended at base by deltoid-ovate many-nerved scarious bracts about 5 cm long. Racemes conical to cylindric-acuminate, 20-30 cm long, 10 cm diam., mature open flowers rose-pink to rich peach-red with a bloom, sometimes yellowish at mouth, unopen flowers redder and bluish-grey tipped, the youngest buds hidden by their longer densely imbricate bracts. Floral bracts the lowest about half the length of the pedicel, clasping and enfolding the pedicel, ovate-deltoid, thin dry many-nerved, about 16 mm long, 10 mm wide when pressed flat. Pedicels the lowest 25-40 mm long (longer in the fruit), about 30 mm the average. Perianth cylindric-trigonous, slightly swollen near the middle, narrowing to the mouth, averaging 40-45 mm in length, very shortly stipitate at base; outer segments free, about 7 mm broad, obscurely 3-5-nerved, the apices paler, sub-acute slightly spreading; inner segments broader than the outer and with more obtuse more spreading apices, with 3 congested raised nerves forming a keel which is almost white near base, pink at the middle and green at the apex. Filaments the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer with their anthers scarcely exserted. Stigma at length exserted 1-2 mm. Ovary 10 mm long, 3 mm diam. at base, tapering into the style, finely 6-grooved, deep green.
More
Stem short, sometimes reaching 1 metre in length and 8-12 cm in diam. Leaves numerous 30-60 in a dense rosette, arcuate-erect, 30-65 cm long, 3-7 cm broad at the base, 8-10 mm thick, lanceolate and distinctly acuminate, flat above, slightly canaliculate towards the tip, convex below, light green or slightly glaucous armed along the margin with sharply pointed red, horny prickles, which are 3-4 mm long and 10-17 mm apart. Tips of most of the older leaves withered and reddish in colour. Inflorescence 2-3.5 metres long; peduncle stout and branched, from 2-8 branches, erect-patent, subtended by deltoid-ovate bracts at the base; racemes conical-cylindrical 15-50 cm long, dense, with loosely pendulous flowers, floral bracts ovate-deltoid, many-veined, at first densely imbricate, 15-20 mm long and 10-12 mm broad; pedicels 20-25 mm long. Perianth cylindric, slightly swollen towards the middle and tapering towards the tip, rich peach red, 40-43 mm long, segments free, yellowish green at the tips. Anthers and style shortly exserted, filaments and style greenish yellow, anthers reddish brown. Capsule enwrapped with the dry perianth, cylindrical, 3-angled, 15-18 mm long and about 6 mm broad, greyish; fruit-bearing pedicels 25-30 mm long, erect. Seeds small, very narrowly 3-winged, dark, 2-4 mm long.
Plants caulescent; stem to 1 m tall. Leaves 40-60, suberect to spreading, 300-500 x 40-150 mm, glaucous green. Inflorescence with 5-8 branches, some of these branched, total height 2.0-3.5 m; bracts spathulate, 12-16 x 6-10 mm, many-nerved. Flowers pale to bright pink with bloom, 35-45 mm long; all segments free; pedicels 12-40 mm long. Anthers not or hardly exserted. Ovary 6-10 x 2-3 mm, deep green; style exserted 1-5 mm. Fruit not seen.
Leaves in a compact rosette, erect-spreading; lamina 40–50 cm long, 10–15 cm wide at the base, lanceolate-attenuate, often with a withered apex, thinly fleshy, light greyish-green, tinged pink in dry conditions, without spots, obscurely lineate; margin cartilaginous with pungent, orange deltoid teeth 2–4 mm long and 8–13 mm apart.
Inflorescences erect, 1–2 m tall above the leaf rosette; peduncle 4–8(11)-branched, the lowest branches occasionally rebranching; branches spreading, subtended by ovate scarious bracts up to c. 2 × 1.5 cm, with several sterile bracts below each raceme.
Caulescent, succulent herb. Stem up to 1 m high. Inflorescence 2.0-3.5 m high. Perianth without a basal swelling, outer perianth segments connate in basal two-thirds. Pedicels 12-40 mm long. Flowers pale to bright pink.
Racemes 20–30 × 10 cm, cylindrical-acuminate, densely flowered, the buds covered by the bracts; bracts 15–20 × 8–10 mm, broadly ovate-lanceolate, scarious, many-nerved; pedicels 25–35 mm long.
Perianth bright pinkish-red with a bloom, 28–35 mm long, 7–8 mm in diameter across the ovary, cylindric-trigonous; outer segments free to the base, tips slightly spreading.
Stem simple, erect, up to 75(100) cm high, to 25 cm in diameter, covered with persistent withered leaves.
Perennial herb, solitary or occasionally in small groups, rarely suckering, caulescent.
Stamens and stigma slightly exserted.
