Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Asphodelaceae > Aloe

Characteristics

Plants acaulescent or shortly caulescent, dividing at the summit and forming groups of 3-12 rosettes; stems 5 cm diam., old dry leaves not persistent. Leaves 16-20, densely rosulate, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, up to 35 cm long, 11 cm broad; upper surface rather flat low down, canaliculate upwards, glaucous-green, distinctly lineate, with numerous irregularly scattered confluent narrowly oblong or 'H' shaped dull white spots; lower surface convex, similarly lineate, but with the spots fewer and more obscure; margins crenulate, minutely dentate, and with a cartilaginous pink border about 2 mm wide, the teeth soft to firm and 1-4 mm apart. Inflorescence a branched sub-corymbose panicle with slender peduncle and branches, up to 40-60 cm high, usually one only, sometimes a second appearing after the first. Racemes sub-capitate, rather laxly flowered, the terminal 5-6 cm long; the flowers yellow, tinged with orange in upper third, paler underneath, cernuous to pendulous. Bracts lowest about 1 cm long, narrowly lanceolate-deltoid, thin papery, scarious, 3-5-nerved. Pedicels the lowest 20-25 mm long. Perianth 28 mm the average, with a basal swelling 7 mm diam., constricted above the ovary to 5 mm, thence slightly decurved and enlarging towards the throat; outer segments free for 5 mm only, with 5 congested orange nerves confluent at apex, with pale yellow margins and sub-acute rather straight apices; inner segments broader than the outer, and with a broader whiter marginal border than the outer, with 5 congested orange nerves confluent at apex, and with broader more obtuse apices. Filaments filiform-flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer. Stamens the 3 inner and 3 outer in turn not exserted or very shortly exserted 1-2 mm Stigma at length exserted 1-2 mm and remaining exserted after the filaments contract. Capsule 22 mm long, 10 mm diam. at the middle, 6-grooved, for some time enwrapped with dry remains of the perianth.
