Characteristics

Plants acaulescent, solitary, not suckering and forming groups, rarely in groups of 2-3 plants. Leaves 15-20, densely rosulate, sub-erect to erectly spreading, 40-60 cm long, 9-12 cm broad at base when pressed flat; upper surface deeply channelled, somewhat obtusely 'U' shaped in cross-section, bright to milky green, obscurely lineate, usually without spots, sometimes sparingly very obscurely spotted; lower surface dull green, obscurely lineate and usually without spots; margins sinuate-dentate, armed with light brown horny deltoid teeth 3-4 mm long, 10-15 mm distant. Inflorescence a branched panicle 1-1.5 met. high (sometimes 2 met. in very robust specimens), divaricately branched from the middle or higher with 5-9 arcuate-erect to spreading branches, the 1-2 lowest sometimes with 1-2 branchlets producing a total of up to 15 racemes. Racemes elongated, cylindric-acuminate, loosely flowered, 30-50 cm long, the terminal the highest and longest (sometimes reaching 65 cm long in very robust specimens). Bracts narrowly lanceolate-acuminate, thin, dull white, sub-scarious, 3-5-nerved, lowest about as long as their pedicels. Pedicels 12-15 mm long, green. Perianth 35-40 mm long, strawberry-pink, with a large basal swelling 12 mm diam., constricted above the ovary to 5 mm, thence decurved and enlarging towards the throat, the mouth usually wide open; outer segments free for 12 mm with a dull white marginal border 1 mm wide, obscurely nerved, the nerves confluent and greenish at apex, the apices sub-acute slightly spreading; inner segments cohering dorsally to the outer for their greater length, with broader white marginal border, and with more obtuse more spreading apices than the outer. Filaments filiform flattened, pale lemon almost white, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer with their anthers in turn exserted 1-2 mm Stigma at length exserted 2 mm. Ovary 8 mm long, 4 mm diam., at base, slightly tapering into the style, finely 6-grooved, green. Capsule 30 mm long, 17 mm diam.
