Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Asphodelaceae > Aloe

Characteristics

Plants always decumbent, old specimens sometimes developing a stem up to 1 met, long, with old dry leaves persistent, usually solitary, sometimes with stem branched with 2-6 rosettes. Leaves 12-20, broadly lanceolate-attenuate, spreading-incurved, up to 50 cm long, 20 cm broad, rather fleshy: upper surface flat near base, slightly canaliculate near apex, usually distinctly striate, glaucous to somewhat reddish tinged, not spotted or sometimes very obscurely spotted; lower surface convex, not spotted, clearly striate; margins entire, with a 2-3 mm broad pale pink to almost red border. Inflorescence a branched panicle up to 1 met. high, 1-3 from a rosette, simultaneous or consecutive, branched high up with 6-12 branches, the lowest branches with 1-6 branchlets, the whole panicle rather corymbose. Racemes usually about 6 cm long and broad, but varying from capitate to slightly conical, the buds usually greenish tipped, the flowers peach-red to coral-red. Bracts narrowly deltoid-acuminate, about 5 mm long, thin, scarious whitish about 3-5-nerved. Pedicels lowest 15-25 mm, long, usually the colour of the perianth. Perianth averaging 30 mm in length, with a sub-globose basal swelling 6 mm diam., constricted above the ovary, thence slightly decurved and enlarging towards the throat; outer segments free for 6-8 mm, obscurely nerved, with white to pale lemon marginal border and sub-acute spreading apices; inner segments dorsally adnate to the outer for their greater length, with broader paler yellowish marginal border, and with more obtuse apices. Filaments filiform-flattened, lemon coloured, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer with their anthers in turn up to 1 mm exserted. Stigma at length exserted 1-2 mm. Ovary up to 8 mm long, 3 mm diam., finely 6-grooved, pale green.
