Characteristics

Leaves in a dense rosette, spreading, becoming recurved; lamina 30–60 cm long, 6–8 cm wide at the base, lanceolate-attenuate, deeply channelled, uniformly dark green or flushed entirely coppery-red in dry conditions; margin reddish, cartilaginous, reddish with deltoid minutely brown-tipped teeth 1–2 mm long and 6–12 mm apart.

Perianth bright yellow, each segment striped centrally with darker nerves, to 18 mm long, c. 10 mm in diameter at the mouth, campanulate, with much clear nectar; outer segments free to the base.
Inflorescence 1 or occasionally 2, erect to 1 m high; peduncle simple or rarely 1-branched, with scattered sterile bracts below the raceme.
Raceme 15–30 × c. 5 cm, cylindric, very densely flowered; bracts c. 12 × 7 mm, ovate-acuminate, scarious, pale brown; flowers ± sessile.
Stem suckering and branching above the base to form large groups of plants; stem and branches covered with withered leaf remains.
Stamens and stigma exserted c. 10 mm; stamens with orange-yellow filaments and anthers bright orange, stigma yellow.
Perennial herb, solitary, acaulescent or with a usually decumbent stem to 30 cm long.
Seeds c. 2.5 × 4 mm, blackish-brown with very narrow whitish wings.
Capsule to 15 × 7.5 mm, ovoid, brown.
