Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Asphodelaceae > Aloiampelos

Characteristics

Stems long sarmentose, scandent, up to 5 met. and more long, 10-15 mm diam., frequently nodosely branched, the branches sub-verticillate, usually with only the terminal 30-60 cm foliate. Leaves linear-lanceolate, long acuminate, spreading to recurved, rather thin, about 10-15 cm long, 15-25 mm broad, basally sheathing and very distinctly auriculate, the sheaths (internodes) 5-15 mm long, obscurely green-lineate, the auriculate portion of the leaf base about 2-3 mm broad, ciliate with several soft to firm narrowly deltoid white teeth about 3 mm long; upper surface green, flat to slightly canaliculate; lower surface convex, green; margins armed with firm white cartilaginous teeth about 1 mm long, 3 mm distant at base, gradually shorter upwards and becoming obsolescent at apex. Inflorescence simple (sometimes with a short branch), about 20-30 cm long, arising laterally about 10 cm below the apical leaves. Peduncle 12-15 cm long, biconvex at base, with a few scattered deltoid-subulate sterile bracts about 5 mm long. Racemes broadly cylindric, in the wild state 8-15 cm long (a little longer in cultivation), 4-5 cm diam., sub-densely 24-30-flowered, the buds more or less horizontally disposed, open flowers cernuous to sub-pendulous. Pedicels about 5 mm long. Bracts ovate-acuminate, thin, scarious, white, 3-nerved, about 3 mm long. Perianth cylindric slightly clavate, or cylindric and enlarging a little at the throat, slightly curved, averaging about 30 mm long, slightly stipitate at base, scarlet-red, yellowish-green at mouth; outer segments free for 6 mm, obscurely 3-nerved, the nerves dull green and confluent at apex, the apices sub-acute, straight or slightly involute; inner segments free, not adnate to the outer, broader than the outer and with thin white edges, and a keel rose-coloured for its greater length turning greenish at apex. Filaments filiform-flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer, with their anthers in turn exserted 2-4 mm Stigma at length exserted 3-4 mm. Ovary 4 mm long, 2 mm diam., finely 6-grooved, pale green. Capsule oblong, about 18 mm long, 9 mm diam. at the middle. Plants have been recorded in flower during almost every month of the year. There appears to be no maximum flowering period, and it seems that plants flower more or less throughout the year.
