Characteristics

Plant shrubby, with several sub-erect to erect stems densely grouped and forming somewhat untidy bushes. Stems about 1 met. long, 20-25 mm diam., the apical portion sub-laxly foliate for about 30 cm Leaves narrowly lanceolate-acuminate, erectly spreading, up to 20 cm long, 30 mm broad near base, somewhat fleshy, basally sheathing, the sheaths green-striatulate; upper surface dull green, flat to slightly canaliculate; lower surface convex, dull green, very obscurely lineate; margins armed with firm white deltoid teeth 1-2 mm long, 2-4 mm distant. Inflorescence simple, 30-35 cm long; the peduncle comparatively stout, with a few sterile bracts up to 8 mm long and 15 mm broad. Raceme sub-capitate, 5-7 cm long, rather densely flowered, the youngest buds red and sub-erect, older buds horizontally disposed, the lowest open flowers sub-pendulous, yellowish-orange to orange. Pedicels the lowest about 6 mm long. Bracts ovate-deltoid, acuminate, spreading from the base, as long as their pedicels or slightly shorter, thin, sub-scarious, with a prominent median nerve. Perianth yellowish to orange, cylindric-trigonous, up to 40 mm long, shortly stipitate at base and tapering into the pedicel; outer segments varying from free to the middle to free almost to base, faintly 5-nerved in upper quarter, the apices sub-acute, slightly spreading; inner segments free to base, slightly longer and broader than the outer, with 5 congested nerves in median line, the apices brownish and more obtuse than the outer. Anthers exserted 2-4 mm Stigma at length exserted 5 mm. Ovary 9 mm long, 4 mm diam. finely 6-grooved, green.

Plants shrubby, ±1.5 m tall; stems with leaves for most of their length. Leaves erect to spreading, not auriculate, 110-200 x 17-42 mm, slightly channelled, dull green. Inflorescence a simple, capitate, very dense raceme, 300-450 mm tall; bracts deltoid-acuminate, ±4-6 x 2.5 mm, 1-nerved. Flower yellowish to orange, 28-40 mm long, cylindric; outer segments free to between middle and base, inner segments free; pedicels 6-8 mm long, lengthening to ±12 mm in fruit. Anthers exserted up to 4 mm. Ovary ±9 x 4 mm, green; style exserted up to 5 mm. Fruit not seen in ripe state.

Leaves dull green, obscurely lineate beneath, narrowly lanceolate-acuminate, to 20 cm long; sheath not auriculate and without ciliate margins, green-striatulate; margins with firm, deltoid, white teeth. Racemes subcapitate, dense, simple, 30-35 cm long. Flowers reddish in bud, yellowish to orange at maturity, up to 40 mm long; stamens and stigma exserted.
