Characteristics

Stems several, up to 75 cm long, about 10 mm diam., decumbent, with the apical foliate portion ascending. Leaves lanceolate-deltoid, about 15 cm long, 15 mm broad near base, basally sheathing, the sheaths obscurely green-striate, the sheaths (covering the internodes) about 10 mm long, not at all basally auriculate, and not at all ciliate; upper surface flat near base, slightly canaliculate upwards, green, without spots or lines; lower surface convex, green; margins with a whitish cartilaginous edge, armed with crowded minute soft to firm white teeth about 1 mm long, and 1 mm distant. Inflorescence simple, about 30 cm long, the raceme about half the length of the peduncle. Racemes sub-laxly flowered, broadly cylindric slightly acuminate, about 10-12 cm long. Pedicels brownish, the lowest 4-5 mm long. Bracts lanceolate-acuminate, thin, scarious, pale brownish, 3-nerved, as long as the pedicels or slightly longer. Perianth scarlet, 28-33 mm long, cylindric for its greater length, 5-6 mm diam. at base (which is not stipitate), enlarging a little at the mouth; outer segments free for 6 mm, obscurely nerved, turning brownish-green at apex, the margins a little paler, the apices rather obtuse; inner segments free but lightly cohering to the outer, about 3 mm broad near base, widening to 5 mm near apex, with thin white edges and a reddish keel turning greenish at apex, the apices more obtuse. Filaments white throughout, filiform-flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer, with their anthers in turn exserted 2-3 mm Style pale lemon, with the stigma at length exserted 3 mm. Ovary 4 mm long, 2 mm diam., finely 6-grooved, lemon coloured. Flowers appear irregularly throughout the year, with the maximum, it appears, in the summer months.
