Characteristics

Plant a much branched shrub 1-1.75 met. high, the younger branches about 15 mm diam. with the apical 40-60 cm sub-laxly foliate, older branches about 20-25 mm diam. with a shorter apical portion more densely foliate. Leaves linear-lanceolate, acuminate, up to 25 cm long, 25 mm broad at base, spreading to recurved, basally sheathing, the sheaths (covering the internodes) up to 15-20 mm long and prominently green lined; upper surface slightly to deeply canaliculate; lower surface convex; both surfaces semi-glossy green; margins with an exceedingly thin narrow white cartilaginous edge furnished with firm white deltoid teeth about 1 mm long, 3-8 mm distant, usually slightly larger and more crowded nearer base, smaller and more distant upwards, the interspaces straight. Inflorescence simple, springing laterally from near apex of branches, usually 1, sometimes 2 consecutively. Peduncle up to 25 cm long excluding the raceme. Racemes cylindric-conic, 10-15 cm long, rather densely flowered, the buds straight and red. open flowers slightly curved and reddish-orange to orange. Pedicels lowest 3-5 mm long, reaching 10 mm in the fruit. Bracts deltoid-subulate, thin, scarious, 3-5-nerved, about half as long as the pedicels. Perianth cylindric-trigonous, slightly decurved, 40-45 mm long; outer segments free almost to base, but lightly cohering to the inner for about half their length; inner segments free, a little longer and broader than the outer, with 3 congested greenish nerves forming a keel, the apices brown tipped and more obtuse than the outer. Filaments flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer, with their anthers in turn exserted up to 5 mm Stigma at length exserted 5-7 mm and remaining exserted when the perianth dries. Ovary pale lemon, 6 mm long, 4.5 mm diam. at the middle, finely 6-grooved. Capsule roundly oblong, 18 mm long, 14 mm diam.
