Characteristics

Plants tall trees 10-18 met. high, with a trunk 1-3 met. diam. at ground level, narrowing upwards, dichotomously and copiously branched and rebranched from about the middle, the branchlets terminating in a dense rosette of leaves. Leaves about 20, densely rosulate, ensiform, deeply channelled and recurved, 60-90 cm long, 7-9 cm broad at base when pressed flat, dull green, sheathing at base, the amplexicaul-imbricate portion with a greenish-white marginal border about 7 mm broad; upper surface deeply canaliculate, broadly 'U' shaped in cross-section and about 8 cm across margin to margin; lower surface convex; margins armed with firm horny deltoid brownish-tipped dull white teeth 2-3 mm long, 10-25 mm distant, isolated or sometimes joined by a very narrow thin cartilaginous edge, usually larger and more crowded near base, smaller and more distant upwards. Inflorescence 40-60 cm from base of peduncle to apex of terminal raceme, dichotomously branched low down, usually with 3 racemes more or less in one vertical plane. Peduncle flattened, biconvex at base, 3 cm broad, 2-3 cm thick, up to 10 cm from base to the first branch, not sterile bracteate below the branches. Racemes cylindric, slightly acuminate, 20-30 cm long, 8-10 cm diam., densely flowered, the buds and flowers rose to rose-pink, greenish tipped. Pedicels lowest 10 mm long, thick, (3 mm diam.), the colour of the perianth. Bracts exceedingly narrowly linear-acuminate, about 1 mm broad low down, 10 mm long, almost hair-like and coiled backwards. Perianth rose to rose-pink, 33-37 mm long, cylindric-trigonous, slightly upturned at mouth; outer segments free almost to base (tube sometimes 5 mm) rather thick and fleshy, with 5 obscure deep rose nerves in upper third confluent at a green apex, the apices sub-obtuse, spreading; inner segments free, not cohering to the outer, broader than the outer, with 3 congested nerves in median line forming a slight keel, rose-coloured for their greater length, turning green at apex, the apices more obtuse and more spreading to revolute. Filaments rather thick, much flattened, the outer 3 mm broad, the inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer, lemon within the perianth, the 15 mm exserted portion turning brownish-orange. Anthers the 3 inner and 3 outer in turn exserted 15 mm Style pale lemon, almost white, with the stigma at length exserted 15-20 mm. Ovary 8 mm long, 6 mm diam. at the middle, finely 6-grooved, pale olive-green.
