Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Asphodelaceae > Aloidendron

Characteristics

Plants shrubby, 2 met. (sometimes 3 met.) high, and about as broad, copiously and dichotomously branched from ground level; branches ascending or diverging, freely rebranched, about 8 cm thick on the lower parts of the plant, about 2 cm thick on the upper, leafless except at the apices, smooth, and covered with waxy grey powder. Leaves 10-14 in a dense capitate rosette (the rosettes up to 25 cm diam.) lanceolate-linear, usually spreading-decurved, averaging 15-20 cm long, 22 mm broad at base, about 7 mm thick; upper surface flat or slightly canaliculate, glaucous-green; lower surface convex, glaucous-green; margins with a very narrow pale yellow sub-cartilaginous edge, armed with minute, corneous, pale brownish teeth about 1 mm long, 1-4 mm distant. Inflorescence 15-20 cm long, with 1-2 lateral branches from near base. Racemes cylindric, sub-laxly about 20-flowered, the terminal 12-15 cm long, the lateral usually shorter, the buds and flowers canary-yellow to greenish-yellow, more or less horizontally disposed. Peduncle flattened and 12 mm broad at base, about 3 cm from base to the first branch, usually with 2 branches, the 3 racemes more or less in the same plane; branches subtended at base by a thin, scarious, acuminate bract about 4 mm long, 3 mm broad, 3-nerved. Bracts deltoid-acuminate, membranous, thin, scarious, white, 4-5 mm long, 3 mm broad, 1-nerved. Pedicels erectly spreading, green, 8 mm long. Perianth greenish-yellow to canary-yellow, cylindric-ventricose, averaging 35 mm long, the mouth slightly upturned; outer segments free for 25 mm (tube 10 mm), about 10 mm broad at the middle, with several obscure nerves, the apices sub-acute, slightly spreading; inner segments free to base, slightly longer than the outer, white, with thin edges, and with 3 congested greenish nerves in median line forming a slight keel, the apices more obtuse, more spreading. Filaments flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer, pale within the perianth, the 12 mm exserted portion brownish-orange. Anthers the 3 inner and 3 outer in turn exserted 12 mm Style pale lemon, with the stigma at length exserted 12 mm. Ovary elliptical, 6 mm long, 4 mm diam. Capsule 30 mm long, 18 mm diam. at the middle, obtusely 3-angled, green, for a long time enwrapped with the dried remains of the perianth.
More
Shrubby, profusely branched, 2-3 m tall. Stem smooth, with relatively small terminal rosettes. Leaves narrow, oblong, up to 200 mm long, 20 mm wide at base, margins with very small brownish teeth. Flowers in fairly short, branched racemes, yellow, comparatively large, swollen.
