Basal lvs linear, to 4 dm × 2 cm, obtuse or abruptly acute; cauline lvs much reduced or bract-like; stem 3–10 dm; raceme at first conic, becoming cylindric, 3–12 × 2–3 cm; fls 1 cm wide; 2n=32. Open woods; s. N.Y., Pa., W.Va., Ky., Mo., and Okla., s. to Fla. and Ark. June, July. (Chrosperma m.)
