Annual or rhizomatous perennial herb with erect or ascending unbranched or sparsely branched 4-angled stems 20–60 cm. tall, rooting at the lowest nodes.. Leaves narrowly lanceolate to elliptic-obovate, 1–6(–8) cm. long, 0.2–1.7 cm. wide, acute at the apex, truncate, subcordate or subhastate at the base or lowest attenuate-cuneate.. Cymes 3–many-flowered, dense, sessile or subsessile; pedicels suppressed or very short; bracteoles linear, 0.4–5 mm. long.. Calyx-tube campanulate, 1.5–2 mm. long; lobes 4, very broadly triangular, 0.5–1 mm. long; appendages very short or ± lacking.. Petals white, 0.5 mm. long or sometimes lacking (see note).. Stamens 4.. Ovary globose, 0.7–1.2 mm. in diameter; stigma subsessile or style 0.25–0.3 mm. long at least in fruit..
