Characteristics

Robust shrub 0.90-2.50 m tall with virgate, tomentose branches. Branchlets curved patent. Leaves imbricate broadly obovate, mucronate, cuneate, penninerved, 8-18 x 5-13 mm, densely sericeous on both sides. Flowers large, single in the axils of leaves in a spike-like assemblage 2.5-7.0 cm. Bract subulate, 2.3-6.0 x 0.3-0.8 mm, sericeous. Calyx softly villous, 5.5-11.0 mm; calyx lobes triangular, acute; upper lobes medially fused to 1.0-2.5 mm from their apices, lower lobes subequal 3.0-7.5 mm; receptacular part 0.7-2.3 mm. Corolla bright purple to reddish, scented. Vexillum lamina obovate, emarginate, 9.5-15.5 x 7.0-13.5 mm, auriculate; claw 2.5-5.0 mm. Ala blades oblong, rounded, 7.5-14.5 x 3.0-5.5 mm; claws 3.0-6.5 mm. Carina blades 6.0-12.0 x 2.2-4.5 mm, obliquely oblong, rounded apically and with a low basal bulge; claws 3.5-6.0 mm. Stamens adnate to the receptacle for 0.7-2.3 mm, excluding this 10.0-17.0 mm, connate for the basal 6.0-11.0 mm; anthers 0.6-1.2 mm, subequal, alternately dorsifixed and nearly basifixed. Pistil 10.0-18.0 mm, 2-4-ovulate; ovary and lower part of style sericeous; upper part glabrous. Pod oblong-falcate, leathery, 6.0-14.0 x 4.0-8.0 mm, subacute, compressed with a foxy pubescence, 2-4-seeded.
