Characteristics

A tall, graceful shrub up to 1.80 m, much branched with virgate or ramulose branches, rarely decumbent, sprawling. Branches tomentose, branchlets erectopatent, densely leafy. Leaves satiny, imbricate, 7-19 x 3.5-11 mm, ovate, elliptic or obovate, apiculate, almost sessile, one-nerved or obscurely penninerved, sericeous on both sides. Inflorescences subsessile, 1-flowered in axils of leaves, either crowded and somewhat capitate at the ends of short branchlets or in a spike-like assemblage 2-7 cm, the axis eventually continuing the growth apically. Pedicel short, 0.4-0.8 mm. Bract 1.8-5.0 x 0.3-0.7 mm, narrow triangular, acute, sericeous. Calyx 4.2-7.0 mm, sericeous; calyx lobes triangular, acuminate, upper lobes fused medially to 0.9-2.0 mm from their apices, lower lobes subequal, 2.3-5.0 mm long, the middle lobe broader than the lateral ones; receptacular part 0.8-1.4 mm. Corolla deep mauve. Vexillum lamina suborbicular, 5.2-9.5 x 5.0-7.0 mm, emarginate, auriculate; claw 2.0-3.2 mm. Ala blades oblong, 4.2-10.0 x 1.8-3.7 mm, rounded apically and with minute wrinkles; claws 2.8-4.5 mm. Carina blades obliquely oblong, 4.2-8.0 x 1.8-2.6 mm, broadest in the middle and with a low basal bulge; claws 2.8-4.5 mm. Stamens adnate to the receptacle for 0.8-1.4 mm, excluding this 7.0-10.0 mm, connate for the basal 3.2-6.0 mm; anthers dimorphic 0.4-0.9 mm, alternately basifixed and dorsifixed. Pistil 5.8-11.5 mm, style slender; ovary biovulate; this and lower part of style pubescent, upper part glabrous. Pod 8-11 x 4-4.8 mm, ovate, acuminate, villous, 2-seeded.
