Leaves closely packed, alternate; quite large, blunt, green, hidden beneath imbricate, firmly appressed, widely ovate, pure white, entire, papery scales (stipules); shoots white. Flowers 1 or few, short-pedicelled, at stem apex, sometimes cleistogamous, white; bracts scaly. Seeds echinate.
