Characteristics

Plants perennial, caespitose, longest 70 mm broad and 20 mm high arising from a thick stem up to 20 mm broad and 10 mm high. Tubers branching from the main stem longest 25 x 15 mm, pyriform drawn out producing numerous slender, spreading, twisting roots. Leaves 25 to numerous in a tight rosette c. 15 mm in diameter; ± ovate from a narrow base and with a flat triangular, papillose apex, 10-13 x 4 mm, base light green with brown-maroon apical portion, axillary hairs white, increasing in length and density during the arid summer months to protect the leaf rosettes from increased solar radiation especially ultraviolet rays. Peduncle curving downwards, up to 20 x 1.5 mm; elongating and erect after fertilization, increasing to about 30 mm; peduncular bracts narrowly ovate, acute, 2 x 1 mm, with a tuft of basal hairs. Inflorescence with 2-A flowers; pedicel up to 15 x 1.2 mm, bract 1.8 mm, ovate, acute with a tuft of axillary hairs; sepals olive green, boat-shaped, 7 x 4 mm. Flowers 12-15 mm in diameter, opening towards the end of the afternoon, petals obovate with a small apiculus, bright shiny pink, 7 x 5 mm except for the odd petal which is 8 x 5 mm. Stamens threadlike, 5 x 0.3 mm, anther rounded-oblong, orange. Ovary fusiform, 3 x 1.5 mm, light pea-green. Style 4 x 0.8 mm, light lilac, stigmatic lobes ellipsoid erect, adpressed, 3 x 1.5 mm, projecting well beyond anthers. Seed outer capsular sheath, 1.3 x 1.1 mm, with palisades of imbricating, parallel, ovate transparent cells, seed more or less comma-shaped, 1 x 0.8 mm, upper flatfish surface lightly, minutely rugose, orange-brown.
