Anaxeton virgatum Dc.

Suffrutex, much branched. Branches ± closely leafy below and less leafy above. Young parts of branches woolly, older ones glabrous and nude and marked with leaf-scars. Leaves suberect-patent, often apically recurved, narrowly oblong, (0.5-)1-2(-3) cm long and (0.5-)1-1.5 mm wide, mucronate, smooth and glabrous on upper side. Corymbophore (5-)10-15(-25) cm long and 1-1.5 mm in diameter, densely woolly. Corymb (0.5-)1-2.5(-3) cm wide. Peduncles 5-10 mm long, densely woolly. Capitula numerous, minute, very densely crowded, 2-3-flowered. Involucral bracts 8-12. Outer bracts narrowly oblong-narrowly elliptic, 2.5-3 mm long and 0.5-1 mm wide, light brown with browner apex and base, acute, outside and margins sparsely sericeous-woolly at the very base. Middle bracts narrowly obovate-somewhat stipitate, 2.5-3 mm long and c. 0.5 mm wide in the middle and c. 1 mm wide at the apex, apical part brown-whitish, obtuse, remaining part light brown-light green, outside and margins glabrous-sparsely sericeous. Inner bracts stipitate; claw elliptic-obovate, 2-2.5 mm long and 1-1.5 mm wide, Iight brown-light green, outside and (especially) margins sparsely sericeous; lamina circular (-transversely broadly elliptic), 1-1.5 mm long and wide, white, opaque, truncate and somewhat undulate. Female floret 1. Corolla 1.5-1.8 mm long. Pappus bristles c. 10, 0.2-0.5 mm long, whitish, ± straight, sparsely barbellate, free at the base or basally fused into an annulus. Achene narrowly oblong-narrowly elliptic, 1-1.5 mm long and c. 0.5 mm wide, brown-deep brown, (glabrous-) very sparingly puberulous. Male florets 1-2, corolla 2-2.3 mm long, broadly campanulate above. Pappus bristles 10-15, (1-)1.2-1.5 mm long, very unequal in length, brownish, straight, barbellate, basally fused into an annulus and connate to about 4/5.
