Anchusa arvensis (L.) M.Bieb.

Erect or ascending, usually branched, hispid annual 2–6 dm; lvs narrowly oblong to oblanceolate, 4–8 cm, repand-dentate or entire; cor-tube 4–7 mm, distinctly bent, hardly surpassing the cal, the limb oblique, 4–6 mm, with unequal lobes; stamens inserted at or below the middle of the tube; nutlets obliquely ovoid, 1.5–2 × 3–4 mm; 2n=48. Native of Europe, intr. as a weed in waste places in our range; 2n=48. (Lycopsis a.)

Light, sandy and chalky soils in arable fields, sandy heaths and near the sea. Fields, kitchen gardens, wastelands, roadsides, etc.

The leaves are often cooked with barley.

Can be grown by seedlings.
