Vigorous liana, climbing in high trees, entirely glabrous.. Floriferous shoots 4–5 mm. in diameter, with obvious leaf-scars 4 mm. in diameter.. Leaves subsessile, some scattered on the main and the sterile shoots, narrowly obovate-elliptic, reaching 50 cm. long and 10 cm. broad, others crowded in rosette on flowering shoots, obovate-elliptic or narrowly elliptic, tapering towards the base then revolute and decurrent, apex obtuse or sometimes ending in a short 3–4 mm. long acumen, 6.5–19 cm. long and 2–5.5 cm. broad, with 10–14 lateral nerves, reddish brown flushed when young.. Cymes axillary or apparently terminal, laxly 2–3 times dichotomously branched, without hooks, delicate, 5–11 cm. broad and 8–16 cm. in total length; peduncle 1 mm. diameter and 2.5–4.5 cm. long to the first ramification; floriferous axes retaining the 3–6 mm. long bases of the often slightly recurved pedicels; mature buds subglobose, 5–7 mm. in diameter; pedicel 5–12 mm. in total length, articulated in the upper two-thirds, slightly accrescent under the fruit, often recurved after the fall of the flower.. Flowers spreading, 9–10 mm. in diameter.. Sepals 5–7 mm. long and 3–4 mm. broad, green and tinged with red towards the tip, some ± ciliate.. Petals imbricate, 6–7 mm. long and 4–5 mm. broad, slightly fleshy, yellow fading to buff.. Stamens 10–15, in 1–2 cycles, connate at their base; filaments 1 mm. or 1.5–2 mm. long; anthers yellow, 0.7 mm. long.. Ovary with the upper part free, conical, 1.5 mm. long, furrowed lengthwise; styles free towards the base, linear, pale green, 3 mm. long, each ending in a 0.5 mm. diameter stigma.. Fruits coriaceous, adnate to the receptacle and to the calyx-tube in a falsely inferior fruit, obconical, chesnut-brown, 0.5–0.8 cm. high and 6–9 cm. total diameter; sepals unequal, generally 3 long and 2 shorter, with their thickened base adnate to the fruit and canaliculate, with their free part spreading, much enlarged, wing-like, narrowly obovate-elliptic, slightly coriaceous, reaching 3–5 cm. long and 0.6–1.5 cm. broad, forming at the top of the false-fruit an unequal rayed star with a central and conical nipple-shaped elongation 3–4 mm. high.. Seeds obconical, 3–4 mm. long and 4–5 mm. diameter, whitish.. Fig. 1.
