Rhizome short and stout.. Basal leaves usually thrice ternate, the ultimate lobes more or less deeply and narrowly segmented, 0.3–4.0 dm. long, more or less hairy on lower surface.. Flowering stems 0.7–7.0 dm. tall, with a silky adpressed indumentum dense near the involucre and below the flower, one-flowered.. Involucre very reduced, sometimes only slightly foliaceous.. Flower 2.5–6.5 cm. in diameter.. Sepals white or white tinged pink on inner surface, outer surface often pink, red, or purple.. Carpels and achenes with dense silky indumentum, style short and glabrous, less than 1 mm. long in fruit.
