Flowering stems 0.7–7.0 dm. tall, with a silky adpressed indumentum dense near the involucre and below the flower, one-flowered.. Involucre very reduced, sometimes only slightly foliaceous.. Flower 2.5–6.5 cm. in diameter.. Sepals white or white tinged pink on inner surface, outer surface often pink, red, or purple.. Carpels and achenes with dense silky indumentum, style short and glabrous, less than 1 mm. long in fruit.
