Subshrubs to medium-sized shrubs, 0.5-2.0 m high. Young branches villous to puberulent, angled, not grooved. Older branches glabrate, terete, bark greyish, with brachyblasts. Leaves subsessile or petiolate, scabrate to strigose or puberulent to glabrate, narrowly elliptic or obovate, 30-80 x 15-35 mm; petioles up to 2 mm long. Flowers usually solitary with one abortive flower bud, axillary, subsessile or pedunculate, developing on brachyblasts, usually in clusters. Bracts and bracteoles enclosing flowers, tomentose to puberulent, narrowly oblong to narrowly triangular, bracts 2.5-7.0 x 1-2 mm, bracteoles 1.5-5.0(-7.0) x 1-2 mm. Calyx tomentose to densely puberulent, 3.5-6.0 mm long; lobes narrowly triangular, 2-5 x 1.0-1.5 mm. Corolla 38-60 mm long, red to orange; tube 10-20 mm long; upper lip 28-40 x 9-13 mm, apex bifid; lower lip narrowly oblong, 26-35 x 2-4 mm. Stamens: filaments 26-35 mm long, anthers 3-4 mm long. Pistil: ovary densely strigose, 2.0 x 1.5 mm; style 38-54 mm long. Capsule sparsely strigose, 25-30 x 8 x 6 mm. Seeds 6 x 5 mm, 2 mm thick, rugose.
