Characteristics

Erect annual. Flowers in heads, 4-merous. Calyx-tube ovoid-urceolate; lobes persistent, alternating with slender setose intersepalar appendages. Petals obovate, with an apical tuft of hairs. Stamens equal; anthers oblong-elliptic, truncate, with a large pore; connective produced below the anther, arched and with 2 tubercular anterior appendages at the junction of the filament. Ovary partly adherent to the calyx-tube, convex, with a small setose crown around the style-base. Capsule enclosed in the dry calyx-tube, valvate. Seeds small, cochleate.
