Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 4 (–6) m high, deciduous. Stipules linear-lanceolate, 0.5–1 mm long. Leaves: petiole 1–1.2 mm long; lamina obovate, cuneate-obovate or ± orbicular, 3–28 mm long, 3–20 mm wide, base cuneate, margin entire, tip rounded, obtuse. Male flowers 1.5–2 mm long; calyx lobes ovate-orbicular, 0.4–0.5 mm long; disc glabrous or with scattered hairs; stamens 4. Female flowers 1.5–2 mm long; pedicel 0.2–0.5 mm long; calyx 5-lobed, with lobes ovate, 0.5–0.8 mm long; disc 5-lobed, glabrous; styles 3, recurved, terminal, 0.5–0.7 mm long. Fruit flattened-elliptic, purple-black, 4–5 mm long, c. 4 mm diam.

Environment

It is a tropical plant. It grows in coastal scrubs. In north Queensland it grows from sea level to 900 m altitude. It also occurs on sandstone escarpments. It needs good drainage and regular watering. It occurs in southern Papua New Guinea.
