Characteristics

Tubers ovoid or elongated, 1–5 cm long, strigose. Leaves submerged (uncommon) and floating. Floating leaves: petiole to c. 70 cm long; blade ovate or elliptic, 2.8–14 (–27) cm long, 0.6–4.3 cm wide, not bullate; base mostly cordate, rarely truncate or cuneate; margins flat; apex obtuse, mucronulate, acuminate, rarely emarginate; veins 7–9; lacunae in 0–1 row on each side of midvein. Peduncle to 30 (–73) cm long, often slightly broadening at inflorescence base. Spathe to 1.5 cm long, caducous. Inflorescence emergent or floating, single, to 9 cm long, yellow. Flowers closely spaced, turned in all directions, bisexual. Perianth segments 2, spathulate, 1.4–2 mm long, yellow, 1-veined. Stamens 6. Carpels 3 (rarely 2 or 4). Fruiting carpel 2.5–4.5 mm long, 2.3–3 mm wide; beak terminal, often curved. Seeds narrowly ellipsoid, 4–13 per fruit, with double testa; outer testa loose, transparent and reticulate; inner testa brown and close fitting; embryo without a plumule.
