Characteristics

Tubers ovate to elongate, 0.5–4 cm long. Leaves submerged and floating. Submerged leaves: petiole to 15 (–23) cm long; blade lanceolate to obovate, 7–36 cm long, 0.7–2.5 (–5) cm wide, not bullate; base mostly broadly cuneate to obtuse; margins usually slightly to strongly undulate; apex obtuse to blunt-cuneate; veins 5–9 (–11); lacunae in 0–2 (–4) rows on each side of midvein. Floating leaves: petiole to 51 (–91) cm long; blade elliptic or ovate, to 12 (–38) cm long, 0.7–2.5 (–5) cm wide; base mostly cuneate to truncate; margins flat; apex mostly blunt-cuneate; veins 5–9. Peduncle to 50 (–80) cm long, broadening at inflorescence base. Spathe to 1.5 cm long, caducous. Inflorescence emergent, single, to c. 15 cm long, yellow. Flowers closely to widely spaced, turned in all directions, bisexual. Perianth segments 2, spathulate, rarely obovate, 1.2–2.1 mm long, yellow, 1-veined. Stamens 6. Carpels (2 or) 3 (–5). Fruiting carpels ellipsoid, (2.7–) 3.4–7.1 mm long, 2.2–4.5 (–5.5) mm wide, thin and papery; beak mostly terminal, straight, bent or reflexed, to 1 mm long. Seeds obovoid or narrowly ellipsoid, distinctly flattened or terete with a distinct knob at one end, (2 or) 3–5 (–7) per fruit, 2.3–4.8 mm long, 0.7–1.6 mm wide; outer testa loose and easily removed; the inner testa usually removed easily though closely adhering and difficult to detect.
