Characteristics

Dwarf shrub, up to 0.3 m high; spiny. Stems spreading or erect; leafy. Leaves sessile; blade linear, 11-35 x 0.5-3.0 mm, apex acute, ridged midrib forming spine with age. Flowers: axillary, usually longer than leaves; calyx shortly 5-lobed; corolla tubular, expanded above, lobes short, 10-18 mm long, blue to violet or mauve, often darker round mouth, sometimes white in throat; Oct.-Dec.
