Characteristics

Rosulate herb becoming subshrubby, to 1 m high. Basal leaves petiolate, 7–20 cm long, glaucous; lamina pinnatisect, irregularly lobed and toothed, each lobe and tooth ending in a sharp spine; cauline leaves becoming sessile and clasping stem. Inflorescence a leafy, cymose panicle; pedicels c. 1 cm long. Sepals 3, cucullate, with a strong terminal spine and dorsal spines. Petals 6, 2.5–4 cm long, cream to pale yellow. Capsule ellipsoidal-fusiform, 3–4.5 cm long, strongly spiny. Seeds globose, 1.5–2 mm diam., black, reticulate.
