Perennial, rhizomatous herb, 0.1-0.2 m high; stem compressed and 2-winged. Leaves linear, usually ± half as long as stem, all basal except for 1(2) near stem apex, apex acuminate. Spathe green, with dry margins. Bracts broadly lanceolate, scarious with herbaceous keels, margins entire in bud, becoming lacerate. Inflorescence terminal or subterminal, 4-flowered; flowers blue, ± sessile; tepals obovate. Ovary: style with 3-fid apex. Flowering time Sept.-Mar. Capsule ovoid.
Rhizomatous, perennial herb, up to 300 mm high. Leaves with blade of basal ones narrowly ovate, 1-3 mm wide, leaf apices finely acuminate; cauline leaves solitary or absent. Flowers: scape narrow, 1-2 mm wide; bract apices acuminate; perianth purplish blue, segments 9-17 x 4.5-7.5 mm; Jan. Fruit an oblong capsule, 5-13 mm long.
Flower clusters 1–2(3), terminal or subterminal, nearly sessile, 4-flowered; spathes 8–10 mm long, broadly lanceolate, scarious with herbaceous keels, margins entire in bud, becoming lacerate; floral bracts similar, entirely scarious.
Slender, rhizomatous perennial, 10-15 cm, stem compressed and 2-winged, consisting of 1 long internode, with a short, subterminal leaf. Leaves linear, narrow. Flowers blue, spathes dry-membranous, lacerate with age. Capsules ovoid.
