Characteristics

Plants (80-)120-300(-500) mm high. Stem compressed and 2-winged, 1-2(-3) mm wide, consisting of 1 long internode with a short, subterminal leaf, simple or with short subterminal branch. Leaves linear to narrowly sword-shaped, in a basal fan, half to ± 2/3 as long as stem; cauline leaf solitary, 8-20 mm long, subtending apical flower cluster. Flower clusters mostly 1 or 2(3) on short branches or ± sessile, crowded near stem apex, each mostly 2-flowered, rarely with ± sessile flower cluster at stem base; spathes green with dry margins or entirely dry, 6-11 mm long, bracts slightly shorter than spathes, dry-membranous, often rust-brown, torn with age. Flowers blue, ± sessile; tepals elliptic, unequal, outer ± 6-11 x 3-6 mm, inner ± as long but 5-7 mm wide. Filaments 3-4 mm long; anthers ± 2.2 mm long. Style 5-6 mm long; stigma lobes broad, undulate. Capsules ovoid-oblong, (4-)5-8 mm long, subsessile or on pedicels up to 2 mm long. Seeds angular-prismatic, sculpturing reticulate.

Flower clusters 1–2(3), terminal or subterminal, nearly sessile, 4-flowered; spathes 8–10 mm long, broadly lanceolate, scarious with herbaceous keels, margins entire in bud, becoming lacerate; floral bracts similar, entirely scarious.
Slender, rhizomatous perennial, 10-15 cm, stem compressed and 2-winged, consisting of 1 long internode, with a short, subterminal leaf. Leaves linear, narrow. Flowers blue, spathes dry-membranous, lacerate with age. Capsules ovoid.
Leaves several, usually about half as long as the stem, 2–5(8) mm wide, linear to narrowly lanceolate, all basal except for one leaf (rarely 2) near the stem apex, this 3–5 cm long.
Perennial herb, up to 300 mm tall. Basal leaves lanceolate, 1-3 mm wide, leaf apices finely acuminate. Scape narrow, 1-2 mm wide. Bract apices acuminate. Flowers purplish blue.
