Characteristics

Plants up to 45(-55) cm.. Leaves several crowded in a basal fan, sword-shaped, 1/2-2/3 as long as the stem, (3-)4-6 mm. wide.. Stems compressed and broadly 2-winged, 4-5 mm. wide, consisting of 1 long internode and leafless for most of its length, in the upper fourth bearing 1(-2) short leaves, usually branched at these axils, the terminal flower-cluster usually borne some distance above the subtending leaf.. Flower-clusters (1-)2-5, on short branches or sometimes sessile; spathes 1.2-1.5(-2) cm. long, usually green in the midline, dry and reddish brown toward the edges; floral bracts 1-1.2 cm., dry and reddish brown.. Flowers blue, ± sessile or pedicels to 2 mm.. Tepals obovate, 10-12 × 6-7 mm.. Filaments ± 4 mm. long; anthers ± 2 mm. long.. Style ± 5 mm. long, apex 3-fid.. Capsules ovoid-oblong, 9-12 mm. long, on pedicels 4-16(-25) mm. long, rarely nearly sessile.
