Characteristics

Plants (80-)150-350 mm high, usually in small tufts. Stem flattened and 2-winged, mostly consisting of 1 long internode 2.0-3.5 mm wide, usually with a short, subterminal leaf up to 60 mm long, this sometimes evidently not developed or indistinguishable from spathes. Leaves narrowly sword-shaped, half to ± as long as stem, (1.5-)2.5-4.0 mm wide, with narrow, acute hyaline margins. Flower clusters (1)2(3) crowded at stem apex, nearly sessile or on short stalks up to 5 mm long, each (2)4-flowered; spathes dry rusty brown (or green toward base), 15-22 mm long, bracts slightly shorter or longer than spathes, dry rust-brown, becoming torn with age. Flowers subsessile, deep blue; tepals united basally for ± 3 mm, outer tepals 15-18 x 6-7 mm, inner ± 17 x 8-9 mm. Filaments ± 4 mm long; anthers ± 3 mm long. Style ± 5 mm long, stigma lobes rounded, undulate. Capsules ovoid-oblong, 8-12 mm long, subsessile. Seeds angular-prismatic, sculptering foveate.
