Characteristics

Plants mostly 0.9-1.5 m high. Stems rounded in section, usually much branched, branches ascending, with few sessile lateral flower clusters. Leaves narrowly sword-shaped, broad, mostly 10-14(-25) mm wide, leathery and fibrous. Flower clusters many, mostly stalked, each mostly 4-or 5-flowered; spathes boat-shaped, mostly 9-15 mm long, dry, rust-brown with broad, pale transparent margins, minutely hairy or scabrid outside or glabrous. Flowers blue, upright to half nodding; tepals obovate, 16-20 x 6-8 mm. Filaments 7-8 mm long; anthers 4-5 mm long. Ovary obovoid, 3-lobed; style 8-10 mm long, apex minutely 3-notched. Capsules oblong in outline, 3-winged, 14-25(-30) mm long. Seeds lamellate, kidney-shaped, ± 3.0-3.5 mm long, mostly 2 or 3, rarely up to 5, per locule, margins papillate.
