Characteristics

Plants up to 1.5 m high, usually forming clumps. Stems ± terete, bearing crowded, short branches above. Leaves linear, strap-like, broad, ± half as long as stem, mostly 10-15 mm wide, fibrous. Flower clusters numerous, borne on short branches or sessile, crowded in upper part of stem, each 4-to 6-flowered; spathes and bracts 5-10 mm long, lanceolate, dry-membranous, translucent with dark keels. Flowers nodding, blue (pale pink in some cultivated forms), greenish yellow in throat; tepals 14-16 mm long. Filaments ± 6 mm long; anthers 4-5 mm long. Style 10-12 mm long, minutely 3-notched at apex. Capsules short, narrowly 3-winged, 8-12 mm long. Seeds lamellate, kidney-shaped, mostly 2 per locule, ± 4 x 2.5 mm, margins smooth.
