Plants 25-35 cm. high.. Leaves 6 or more in a basal fan, narrowly lanceolate to sublinear, 5-7 mm. wide, ± 2/3 to nearly as long as the stems, fairly soft-textured the stem bearing 2-3 leaves, these decreasing in size above, the upper subtending flower-clusters.. Stem with leaves at the lower nodes, compressed and 2-winged, unbranched.. Flower-clusters 4-several per axis in spicate arrangement, sessile except the terminal, each usually 4-flowered; spathes and bracts scarious except the abaxial, this partly green but with red-brown membranous margins, remaining spathes and bracts scarious, red-brown, ovate-lanceolate, the margins entire or irregularly torn, 7-10 mm. long.. Flowers bright blue, ± sessile.. Tepals obovate, ± 8 × 3.5 mm.. Filaments ± 2 mm. long; anthers ± 1.5 mm. long.. Style ± 5 mm. long, 3-lobed apically (only known in plants from Madagascar).. Capsules ovoid, 8-10 mm. long, sessile.
