Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Iridaceae > Aristea

Characteristics

Plants 700-950 mm high. Stem simple, lightly compressed in lower half, flower clusters sessile except the terminal. Leaves several, the basal ± 1/2 as long as stem, ± linear, relatively soft-textured, 10-16 mm wide, the upper cauline, shorter, partly to entirely sheathing. Flower clusters 5 to 6 per axis, sessile except the terminal (?or lowermost flower cluster shortly stalked), subtended by a prominent green spathe up to 24 mm long, crowded with up to 16 flowers each; remaining spathes and floral bracts pale green below, becoming dry and reddish brown with age, often ultimately irregularly torn, 15-20 mm long. Flowers ± sessile, deep blue; tepals 12-15 x 5-6 mm, outer whorl smaller than inner. Filaments ± 4 mm long; anthers ± 3 mm long. Style ± 5 mm long, slightly lobed apically. Capsules narrowly ovoid-oblong, 7-8 mm long, shallowly 3-lobed. Seeds angular with slightly flattened sides, ± 1.5 mm long, surface smooth.
