Characteristics

Plants 1.0-1.5 m high. Stems ± terete, with long spreading branches, bearing several to many sessile and stalked flower clusters. Leaves several, linear, glaucous, with acute, often reddish margins, 4-5 mm wide, fibrous. Flower clusters numerous, stalked or sessile, laxly spaced, each usually 4-flowered; spathes lanceolate, 8-10 mm long, dry-membranous and translucent, with dark keels extending as a long cusp, bracts similar but 6-8 mm long. Flowers blue, secund, subsessile, tepals 14-16 mm long. Stamens unequal; lower (abaxial) filament 8 mm long, upper (adaxial) two filaments ± 6 mm long; anthers ± 3 mm long. Ovary obovoid, 3-lobed, ± 4 mm long; style 9-10 mm long, minutely 3-notched at apex. Capsules short, broadly 3-winged, 7-8 mm long. Seeds radially compressed, lamellate, kidney-shaped, ± 4 x 2.5 mm, margins smooth.
