Characteristics

Plants 120-350 mm high, usually forming small tufts. Stem terete, usually unbranched or with 1 or 2 short branches, bearing sessile flower clusters. Flower clusters few, sessile below the terminal, or lower on short stalks, subtended by prominent rust-coloured, keeled bracts, each 2-to 4-flowered; spathes and bracts rust-brown, becoming transparent toward the edges, the spathes 12-18 mm long, folded in the midline and keeled. Flowers deep blue, tepals 16-20 x ± 12-14 mm. Filaments 6-7 mm long; anthers ± 3 mm long. Ovary obovoid, 3-lobed; style 8-10 mm long, minutely 3-notched apically. Capsules oblong in outline, 3-winged, 15-25 mm long. Seeds radially compressed, lamellate, kidney-shaped, mostly 2 per locule, with fringe of marginal papillae.
